Jing Yu’s solo exhibition at Madeinartgallery (Milan) presents a body of recent works exploring the concept of map and landscape as a symbolic and layered representation of contemporary identity. Through a meticulous process of engraving, painting, material application, and layering of transparent sheets, the artist constructs imaginary views that evoke mental topographies and ideal cities. The works, enclosed in colored plexiglass cases, create a constant interplay between depth and surface, visible and invisible, urban rationality and organic impulse. The reference to cartography merges with that to skin, weaving, and the neural network: each piece is an emotional map and at the same time a geography of desire, an ideal balance between order and chaos.
The installation, arranged in monochromatic spaces that highlight the tonal contrasts of the supports and materials, guides the viewer through an immersive and meditative experience. The exhibition concludes with a selection of opalescent works that refract light, evoking the architectural utopia of a city alive with reflections and tensions. During the opening, a live jazz concert was held, engaging in a dialogue with the musical layering that permeates the artist’s compositional approach.
