Born in Shouyang, Shanxi province, and active in Beijing, he is a pioneering figure in contemporary Chinese art. He trained at the Art Academy of the People's Liberation Army, graduating in 1989, and later completed his studies in the Oil Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1993. In 2002, he founded his own studio in Beijing’s 798 district, helping to establish one of the main hubs of contemporary Chinese art. His visual language merges autobiography and political symbolism, with military camouflage serving as the expressive core of his work: both pattern and metaphor, camouflage becomes a reflection on war, discipline, identity, and resistance. His compositions combine military references with cultural citations and codes from traditional Chinese art, infused with a strong sense of irony and critique. Recognized as one of the leading figures in the wave of new Chinese painting since the 1980s, his work has influenced entire generations of emerging artists. Today, he continues to create works rich in collective memory and aesthetic tension, leaving a consistent and original mark on the visual landscape of contemporary China.
