No 1 City Light

In this “Red Composition,” Zhang Hong Mei abandons all figurative forms to embrace pure abstract expression, made of color fields and spatial tensions. Color becomes structure, the white line is both mark and direction, and the canvas transforms into a field of forces where boundaries touch without ever merging. The work fits into the artist’s exploration of the power of color and geometric gesture, balanced between compositional rigor and intuitive freedom.

The canvas is dominated by two large, contrasting areas of color: a red one occupying the right portion, and a black one on the left. Between them, accents of yellow appear, along with a thin diagonal white line that cuts across the painting, creating a sense of dynamism and division. The whole conveys an intense visual force, simultaneously evoking both balance and rupture.

This work belongs to the tradition of geometric and chromatic abstraction of the mid-to-late twentieth century, from Barnett Newman to Carmen Herrera, yet it retains an Eastern root in its treatment of emptiness and control of gesture. Zhang Hong Mei combines the harmony of Chinese calligraphy with the communicative power of Western abstract art.

The work is part of a series of large abstract canvases exhibited between 2021 and 2023 at international fairs. It is included in the visual documentation of the exhibition “Landscapes & Shapes” held in Milan at Madeinartgallery (2023).
