City Light

In “City Light”, Zhang Hong Mei explores the visual and perceptual transformation of the contemporary city, translating it into an intense and symbolic vision. Through the use of sharp contrasts and a reduced yet powerful color palette, the artist conveys an urbanized image immersed in an atmosphere suspended between the abstract and the figurative. Here, red becomes a language of energy and vibration, while architectural structures emerge and fade within the black areas that symbolize the shadows of modernity. The work fully aligns with Zhang Hong Mei’s exploration of the urban landscape as both sign and memory.

The work presents an aerial view of the city, completely reinterpreted through an intense interplay of black and red, where the silhouettes of skyscrapers dissolve into an almost digital pattern. The horizon appears incandescent, as if the city were bathed in artificial twilight. There is no human presence, yet the urban structure conveys a vibrant and chaotic energy, typical of global metropolises.

“City Light” sits within the trajectory of contemporary urban abstraction, drawing inspiration both from the tradition of Chinese cityscapes reinterpreted in a modern key and from the pop and optical aesthetics of Western art. The synthesis of flat color fields and perceptual layering connects to the artist’s exploration of visual rhythm and graphic sign as a narrative framework.

The work was presented in preview and documented in the artist’s archive for the 2024 exhibition season. It is currently being published in the upcoming Madeinartgallery catalogue.
